Our goal is to create an easy-to-watch film that lets them relive one of the most memorable days of theirlives. Stylistically, our work feelsmore like a movie and includes natural audio from the day blended with music toaccept the days events. Our longestfilms are only 30 minutes in length which makes it easy to show friends andfamily and hopefully watch at least once a year on your anniversary.

Howdid you get started?

As an artist, I started in collegeselling paintings and continued to graduate with an art history degree. I remember I sold my first painting for $65(that is a lot of money to a college student) and I bought a keg for a partyat my apartment. That was the first timeI experienced the thrill of creating art that emotionally connected withsomeone to the point they were willing to pay for it. And as a weddingfilmmaker I am able to do this everyday.

Whatis the best part about your job?

The best part of my job is to see thereaction of the couple and their friends and family when they are watchingtheir video at the reception. Theylaugh, they cry, they cheer, it is really great to see the smile on their facesas they experience they day that just happened.

Whatsets you apart from others in your industry?

When I was working for my dad at anearly age, he taught me to do the best job I can no matter what it was. At that time I was picking up trash outsidethe family business, but I have carried that lesson over into my business. No matter the budget level, we do our bestjob every step of the way. The extra effort isn’t generally something a couplemay notice, but I believe it is something they can feel while they watch thefinished piece.

Doyou have any hidden talents?

Nonethat I can think of. Wow, that sounds really pathetic. You can leave thisanswer off!

Small is the key word. I shoot about 20 weddings and only take on a few other Portraits/Commercial jobs. I personally work with all my clients from initial consultation through timeline scheduling, engagement portraits, the wedding day, album design and ordering sessions. Everything is really custom because I can devote so much attention to my limited number of clients. My photography style is a blend of fine art print making, documentary journalism, and editorial fashion.

How did you get started?

I got started while I was still in college about 6 years ago. My parents bought me a point and shoot to document my college years. I really didn't end up photographing much of the time spent, but while I was sitting at my desk I wasted time by taking macro photographs of the keyboard/pen/mouser etc etc. (computers were really slow back then!). I created this little mini portfolio of pictures to show my friends (they thought I was crazy). Around that time I had two friends who were really pursuing photography as a career that really inspired me - one mainly by his amazing wedding images and the other because of her sweet camera equipment: she had a enormous Nikon with a huge lens. I thought that was really cool.

What’s the best part about your job?

Oh man so many things. I love studying photography. I will sit for hours and sift through images and bring that inspiration to a wedding day or engagement session. That is fun. I also love making new products and experimentation. Taking the picture is really only half the battle, and ultimately the print is what is going to be around to enjoy and become historically significant. Coming up with new unique prints from historical techniques to modem is really neat. I guarantee I make prints that no one else in Detroit even sells.

What sets you apart from others in your industry?

Personality: I really think I'm made for wedding photography. I am incredibly patient, devoted, focused, and respond really well to being creative under pressure (ie with time constraints.) I think that my ability to turn digital images into art through my print making techniques really makes my business unique as well.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I'm great at spending a lot of money at REI on outdoors and rock climbing equipment!
My wife loves that talent! I love you honey.

How did you get started?

I actually started the business in my apartment in Chicago,quickly ran out of money and moved home to Ann Arbor. I worked out of my homewhile working as a pastry chef for a catering company. After three years Iopened our retail cake shop. Three and a half years later we have built a brandnew facility that opened May 19.

What's the best part about your job?

Definitely beingaround cake all day. We never get sick of it, and we sample it all day!

I think my style sets me apart. We have avery distinct story-book, whimsical style and we try to bring a lot of colorand fun into each design.

I was actually a gymnast for almost 20years, even into my first two years of college.

I started this company with my husband, Nathan 8 years ago. We have grown from 10-15 local small weddings the first year we started out to almost 30 a year now in destinations all over -Detroit, New York, Chicago, Charleston, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. We love that our job takes us local and all over to shoot for some pretty wonderful clients.

How did you get started?

We started in 2003 shooting a friend’s wedding in all black and white on a manual film camera. It was the most nerve racking experience of my life, but I loved every second I spent developing the images and seeing what memories I produced for them. We strove to try to create something new with photography which back then was a feat, since most wedding photography at the time was not very interesting or creative.

What’s the best part about your job?

Getting to work with clients that really “get” the art you are trying to produce from split second moments of their wedding. That makes all the long hours worth it. Also seeing a client tear up or jump for joy the first time they see their images. Nothing is quite like it.

What sets you apart from others in your industry?

We really try to imitate lighting we see in the movies - a cinematic style of lighting, shooting and composing our images definitely sets us apart.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I wish I had some great ones. I am a good figure skater and an okay skier. Nothing more exciting unfortunately!

It was raining the morning of Danielle & Bryan's wedding, and the inclement weather threatened to spoil their outdoor ceremony and reception at Meadow Brook Hall. In our 10-year history, our company has never had an outdoor wedding rained out, so we kept telling Danielle not to worry. Things did dry up enough to proceed as planned, and as the doors opened for Danielle's processional, the sun began to shine. Our perfect record still stands (knock on wood!)

Danielle and Bryan are a beautiful couple - both inside and out - and we were delighted that The Knot Michigan chose to feature their wedding in the Fall/Winter 2011 issue.

Introducing Wish Upon a Wedding

In two months, my husband, Mike, and I will celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. For couples facing a terminal illness, they'll never reach this milestone. All they want is to get married, but planning a wedding isn't always within their reach.

This is where Wish Upon a Wedding steps in. Wish Upon a Wedding is a nonprofit organization that provides weddings and vow renewals to couples facing terminal illness or other serious life-altering circumstances. Often, couples facing such situations do not have the energy, time, money or resources needed to plan their wedding. Wish Upon a Wedding takes care of all the details, offering couples a chance to relax and enjoy a very special day while surrounded by the love of their closest family and friends.

Officially launched in California in January 2010, Wish Upon a Wedding currently has over a dozen chapters around the country to serve wish applicants. The Michigan chapter will be launching in September, and I'm proud to serve on the board as vice president.

I first heard about Wish Upon a Wedding at the annual Association of Bridal Consultants conference in Phoenix this past November. One of our speakers, Sasha Souza, is the president of the national board of directors and she shared her experience with this amazing organization. After watching the video she brought, I knew that this was something that I needed to be a part of. Last summer, I lost my mother-in-law after a long battle with liver disease and cancer, and I had been searching for a way to give back for all of the blessings I have in my life. Elaine was a wonderful, generous and loving woman who freely gave of herself throughout her life, and getting involved with Wish Upon a Wedding seemed like the perfect way to honor her memory.

There are many ways that people can get involved with Wish Upon a Wedding here in Michigan, and you don't necessarily need to work in the events industry. You can:

Make a monetary donation
Volunteer on a committee
Host a fundraiser
Donate products or services for the launch party
Become a wish granter on a wedding day
Donate a percentage of company profits
Donate airline miles to help bring families together on a wedding day

Since the Association of Bridal Consultants is the official trade association parter of Wish Upon a Wedding, ABC-Michigan is hosting a Meet & Greet on Thursday, May 12 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Bastone in downtown Royal Oak (419 S. Main St, Royal Oak, MI 48067). Everyone is welcome to attend and learn more about this organization.

Cost is only $10 in advance or $15 at the door, and all proceeds will be donated to Wish Upon a Wedding. For more information, please visit the event website. I hope to see a lot of my friends and colleagues there!

Couture Accessories Trunk Show

My friend, Karen Sherman of Crowning Glory, asked me to be a part of a unique trunk show for couture bridal accessories, and I'm excited to share the details.

We’re bringing in Liv Hart, of Enchanted Atelier in Washington, D.C., for an exclusive trunk show at the Royal Park Hotel on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26. Liv is a highly-sought designer whose designs have been featured in Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, InStyle Weddings and TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress”, just to name a few.

The trunk show, called The Enchanting Bridal Weekend, is by appointment only, and we are only opening this up to two dozen brides. In addition to the couture bridal accessories – hair pieces, jewelry, etc. – brides will have the opportunity to have your hair and makeup done, to help you better envision your wedding day look. We will also be featuring a custom shoe designer if you are looking for something truly unique.

The event is complimentary but an appointment is required. The Enchanting Bridal Weekend runs from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25, and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 26. Real Wedding: Lisa & Jim

I love Lisa & Jim. They reminded me a lot of me and my husband - they had divided Michigan & Michigan State loyalties, they wanted their wedding to be a day-long celebration, and they just couldn't wait to be married. Did I mention that Lisa is a die-hard Wolverine and Jim is a die-hard Spartan? Clearly I was the right planner for this couple. (Go Green!)

Lisa & Jim chose bright, bold colors of orange, pink and green to give their wedding an energetic, happy feel. I don't think they stopped smiling and laughing the entire day, and their guests packed the dance floor until the very end of the night.

Lisa's uncle, a competitor in a Food Network Challenge, created a special fruit display for the wedding.

The reception featured a "Battle of the Fight Songs", where guests would drop dollar bills into the jars to get the DJ to play their school fight song. The proceeds benefited a charity committed to fighting cancer.

But when that bride also works in the wedding industry, we feel especially honored. I was so excited when Abby & Tommy - of the super-talented Abby Rose Photo - asked me to coordinate their big day. Having photographed hundreds of weddings over the years, they didn't want something traditional, instead opting for an intimate, dinner-party reception at the Palmer House, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home nestled in Ann Arbor. We are one of the largest linen rental companies in the country but we still have that small company feel. With offices and employees in quite a few states, we are able to supply linens and chair covers for any event large or small. No other company in Michigan comes close to the selection the Linen Heroes provide. We are constantly striving to do what we do better.

How did you get started?
I started Chair Covers & Linens over 15 years ago as an outgrowth of the flower shop I owned. At the time there wasn’t a company in the US that specialized in chair covers. We decided early on to focus on one thing and do it really well, and we’ve stayed to true to that original goal. I took a risk and I’ve never looked back.

What’s the best part about your job?
Hmmm, great question! I think there are a couple of best parts about my job. First, I get to work side by side with my sister, Rachel Torok, and Brennan Donovan, two of the hardest working, smartest, honest, and ethical people I know. Second, I get to plan parties for a living – in life it doesn’t get any better than that. I only deal with the periods of joy in people’s lives.

Hi, I’m Ally Hurst from Zingerman’s Bakehouse. We specialize in made-from-scratch cakes using high-quality ingredients like freshly-cracked eggs, Belgian chocolate, as well as real butter & vanilla. We even make our own fondant (tastes just like the inside of an Oreo Cookie!). We offer free consultations that include a custom-cake designing session, as well as samples of our most popular cake flavors. Think rich chocolate cake with a ribbon of chocolate ganache or maybe you’ll be a fan of our dense and delicious buttermilk cake with raspberry butter cream.

How did you get started?
Zingerman’s Bakehouse was started as a companion business to Zingerman’s Deli. Our founders, Paul Saginaw & Ari Weinsweig, traveled around the country eating delicious artisan breads, but couldn’t find that same caliber of baking here in Michigan. So, they asked their friend, Frank Carollo, to start a bakehouse. That was 18 years ago and since then, we have added taste-tempting pastries and mouth-watering cakes to our repertoire.

What’s the best part about your job?
You mean besides eating cake? In all seriousness, I love my job because I have the opportunity to sell our delicious cakes (and feel really good about it since our standards are so high) to some pretty amazing people. All of the creative ideas, the enthusiasm and level of trust our customers show us is extremely gratifying.

What sets you apart from others in your industry?
Our ingredients! We are very particular about what we put into our baked goods. We use Mexican Vanilla Bean, Belgian Chocolate, Michigan Maple Syrup & Honey, Butter that’s 82% butterfat (better taste, better texture), Agra Montagna Preserves, and the list goes on and on. Additionally, as I mentioned before, we use actual butter in our butter cream and offer fresh fondant.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Well, it’s not so much hidden as it is an option people don’t think about, but our cakes travel. We commonly hit the road to deliver cakes in the Metro Detroit area and have gone as far as Chicago, Toledo & Fort Wayne (where we delivered a 5-tiered wedding cake and 3-tiered groom’s cake).

We are Prem and Cheridy Mukherjee of Arising Images. The road to photography has been an interesting journey. My passion for photography came while I was doing a study abroad in Sydney, Australia. I realized how beautiful the world could be and I had a desire to somehow capture a small portion of that beauty to share with others. While in Australia, I had my first true introduction to the Christian church. Since then I have given my life to Christ. Very soon after, I found a church back at home in Michigan and then met Cheridy, while at a friend’s house from church. We met in January of 2000 and both knew immediately that this was just the beginning. We got engaged four months later and were married on June 2, 2001. Not too long after, Cheridy started helping me, and encouraging me, to continue to pursue photography. After getting married, we had ample opportunity to travel and I wanted to develop my photographic skills for the purpose of fine art travel photography.

I was inspired by the likes of David Muench and the late Galen Rowell. I would look at their images and dream of visiting those magical places. My photography started in an attempt to capture awe-inspiring images that would make other people want to plan their next vacation. We were blessed with the opportunity to travel and experience the beauty in the world that God has created!

Soon after, Cheridy started to encourage me to do photos of people and with that, we found the unlimited potential of using photography to capture some of the most special moments in life. With Cheridy's encouragement and assistance, I began to shoot portraits and weddings and trained Cheridy to use a camera, and now we shoot together as a husband and wife team. There is no greater reward than bringing joy to people through our work. We were having so much fun doing weddings and portraits that we decided that this was the career for us. We have since made photography a full-time business and we're looking forward to the opportunities that God provides with each coming day.

In 2007 and 2008, we won the award for Metro Detroit’s Best Wedding Photographer in the WDIV Vote for the Best contest and in 2009, we came in second place.

In November 2007, we were blessed again with the birth of our baby Mayz, who is just an awesome little guy!!

Currently we are in the process of adopting 2 brothers (2.5 and 3.5 years old) from the Michigan foster system and looking forward to how this will bless our family even further!

Because of this adoption, we have decided to venture into even newer territories and hire our first Studio Assistant, Valerie. She has been amazing and will propel our company into new territories and open new doors we have been wanting to open for a long time.

We are now doing photography that captures all aspects of life, from cute snuggly babies, kids that run and play, high school seniors that want to show off their individualism, to weddings which are the best days of people’s lives. We truly have the BEST job in the world!!!

How did you get started?

What’s the best part about your job?
Getting to work from home with my family is an amazing blessing. Also, meeting so many different people and couples who balance each other in different ways is encouraging and inspiring.

What sets you apart from others in your industry?
As a photographer, you must have a grasp on the basics of how a camera works and how to use the available light to make a good photograph.

What WE do is incorporate off-camera lighting to create a fashion image, or use really textured walls or backgrounds to bring color or interest into an otherwise average photo.

And I would say that more than any of that, what sets us apart from most studios is our ability to use our experience in processing the photos after the photo session. A photo might be good but what we can do with the photo after is make it AMAZING!!

Do you have any hidden talents?
(This is Cheridy talking here…) Besides having an amazing ability to make even the most “coerced” person (eventually) have a surprisingly good time during the photo session, Prem is truly one of the best teachers or speakers I have seen. Starting when he began teaching his basic photo classes and even as a speaker on a national photography panel, the way he carries himself and holds attention of the people who are listening to him is unparalleled. Oh, he also was a very gifted painter (oil paints!), which inspired him to pursue photography too!

Real Wedding: Susan & Bob

Fun. That's the word I'd use to describe Susan and Bob and their wedding day. Both had been previously married so they didn't want a traditional wedding; they wanted a fun party with amazing food and oh yeah, a wedding on the side.

Susan called me in a panic just 9 weeks before her wedding...they had the date, they had the photographer, and that was it. We chose Shiraz Gardens in Bingham Farms, a restaurant owned by Bob's friend Matt Prentice, as the venue. At our first site visit, Susan and I spotted a mosaic plate in reds, oranges and yellows, and this became the inspiration for the color palette.

After an intimate ceremony at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Troy, guests made their way to the reception. Hugo the Butler – the life-size mannequin from Bob’s house – greeted them with the guest book (it was my job to transport Hugo, laying in my minivan wrapped in clear plastic, to the venue...thankfully I didn't get pulled over.) Highlights of the night included an abundance of strolling food stations, the sommelier opening a bottle of champagne with a machete, a cotton candy bouquet toss, and a packed dance floor.

Co-owners Carrie Duso and Shannon Progar met in 1997 while working in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as seamstresses for a drapery workroom. Both share education backgrounds in fashion and interior design.

How did you get started?
Emplume was created almost 6 years ago by Shannon and Carrie while looking for an alternative to fresh flowers for Carrie’s wedding. Carrie wanted something fashion forward and didn’t want to waste any of her budget on fresh flowers that would have to be tossed away the next day! They became intrigued by the idea of arranging high quality feathers, preserved floral, luxurious ribbon and a bit of sparkle into the most fabulous of bouquets!

The response to the ‘feather bouquet’ was so great at Carrie’s wedding – the best friends thought for sure there were brides out there who wanted the same gorgeous alternative… and within a few months – Emplume was created!

What’s the best part about your job?
We think the best part of our job is creating really beautiful bouquets for our brides to cherish for years to come! We love anything wedding, and since both of our husbands say we need to find new grooms in order to have another wedding…we live vicariously through our Emplume brides. Both of us are professional seamstresses and also run interior design studios as our ‘day’ jobs! {These days Carrie’s day job is more about 2-year-old Aerin and 7-year-old Isaac. Shannon would certainly argue that 11-year-old French Bulldog Bebe is full-time work too.☺} Our attention to detail and finishing skills have brought us great success as both seamstresses and bouquet designers. How did you get started?

Everything! The artistry aspect is very important to me, but it’s the special connection with each client that is essential. I find whether working with a celebrity or a bride-to-be, expectations for quality work is the same.

Real Party: Kelly's Bridal Shower

We were delighted to work with Kelly's mom, MaryLou, to pull off an unforgettable bridal shower for her only daughter. MaryLou wanted something whimsical and fun, so we designed a vibrant, polka-dot themed party in the conservatory of the Royal Park Hotel. Since the wedding was also being held at the hotel just a month later, we made sure that every detail - even down to the type of rolls that were served - were different from the wedding plans.

Kelly is not the type of girl who likes secrets, but MaryLou and I managed to keep everything a surprise throughout months of stealth planning. More than one guest commented, "If this is what the shower is like, I can't wait to see the wedding!" Luckily, we did not disappoint...but that's another post for another day. Until then, enjoy the shower!

I am fortunate to have lots of help from my patient husband, Dean, who understands the business and the need to be available 24/7 in order to be successful. I feel very lucky for my family and each band member who I consider “family”.

Wow! Not an easy question to answer. First and foremost, I’m a husband and father of three. I’m biased, but I think I have the best family in the world and I thank God for them. My formal educational background is in mechanical engineering. I spent 17 years doing that in the automotive industry. I didn’t know it at the time, but my heavy involvement in computer graphics during those years would lead me into what I do today.

In 1987, I bought my first personal graphics computer and started messing around with digital imaging. In 1992, our first child was born and we purchased our first “serious” camera. Because of that, my interests in digital imaging grew even more and I became even more ingrained in the technology. By the late 90s, due to the exploding popularity of the internet, I was considered by many an expert in digital imaging. Then it happened, somebody asked me to shoot their wedding. I discovered that I really enjoyed it. Then I shot another one. And another one. And another one. So I started Mike Greer Photography. Then in 2001, another monumental event happened - 1,300 people, me included, got downsized! What to do? Search for another job or go for it? Well, I decided I never wanted to experience getting terminated again. So Mike Greer Photography became a full-time business.

Since that time, we’ve specialized in wedding photography and have had a tremendous time doing so. Then in the spring of 2010, another life shifting event took place. We moved out of our house into a studio. We still specialize in weddings, but we’ve added high school seniors and newborns (less than a 1 year old). Our studio is located in downtown Farmington, next to the historic Civic Theater.

How did you get started?
Oops, answered that one above.

What’s the best part about your job?
The best part of what I do is that I get to use my creative abilities to make people look beautiful and capture times of high emotional importance. I’ve discovered that most people don’t think they are very attractive and their self image suffers greatly because of it. So when I get to present images to people looking beautiful, it pleases me greatly. In addition, when mothers see their graduate-age children or see their babies frozen in time, there is a feeling that I’m doing something that is meaningful to people. I love it.

What sets you apart from others in your industry?
The industry tends to want to categorize photographers as “traditional” or “photojournalistic”. Traditional photographers are very heavy on posing. Photojournalists are very hands-off and seek to document things as they happen. In my opinion, neither is better or worse than the other. They are just different. However, I’m after great-looking images regardless of the approach. If that means hand off, so be it. If that means I need to direct people, then so be it. I care about 2 things: not being intrusive and great-looking images.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Many moons ago I played collegiate basketball. I’m also a pretty good cook.

In the wedding industry, you can never know too many people and you should never stop learning. I'm a big proponent of networking and continuing education, and my business is better for it.

Some of my best friends in the industry are other wedding planners, and I know some people find that strange since we’re competitors. I like to think of them as colleagues instead of competitors. True, sometimes we interview with the same bride, but there are more than enough couples getting married in Michigan. I don’t want to do every wedding in the area – just imagine how exhausting that would be.

I’ve learned that when I open myself up to others, I get a lot in return. Last year, I started a roundtable group for wedding coordinators called The Business of Weddings with fellow planner and good friend, Lindsey Nartker of Lindsey Nartker Designs. The group meets periodically throughout the year to share open discussions about owning and operating a successful wedding consulting business. We talk about marketing, branding and even (gasp!) pricing. We’ve all built up a level of trust so we know that no one is going to steal an idea. Instead, we challenge each other to look critically at the way we do business so we can all find ways to improve.

Industry associations are invaluable in making connections and continuing education. I’m involved with both the National Association of Catering Executives (NACE) and the Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC). As the new Michigan State Coordinator of ABC, I’m excited to start reaching out to planners and other wedding professionals so we can work towards making our industry even better.

If you haven’t been to an ABC meeting before, or if it’s been awhile, consider joining us July 14 for our meeting at Summit on the Park in Canton. We’ve got some of the best videographers in the area lined up to discuss the hot trends in wedding filmmaking. You can find more information about the event online at the meeting website.

How did you get started?

I started creating floral pieces at a very young age. My beloved Aunt had a little boutique and growing up, I would work at her shoppe on the weekends. I always had the passion for the industry so after college, even though I had a wonderful corporate job, I would work part time for florists or moonlight doing weddings for clients. After a fashion, God blessed me with enough business in which to leave my corporate job and venture out on my own.

Seeing the joy on the bride’s face when I give her the bridal bouquet!

What sets you apart from others in your industry?
Hollye Mackler Designs is not an “order takers” florist. We take a lot of time to learn about our clients and create relationships with them. Weddings and events can be a stressful time for clients and from our perspective, it is our job to minimize that stress; at a minimum within our realm of responsibility.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Yes! I am an amazing singer…albeit by myself, in the car and with the windows rolled up!

I know it's a blogging faux-pas to apologize for not updating your blog for awhile, but I’m going to do it anyway. I’m sorry. The past few months have been a whirlwind for Laura Davis Events, and I’m excited to bring you up to speed.

With wedding season in full swing, we’ve been busy coordinating some really fabulous events. We love our clients. Seriously. We’re working with some of the nicest couples and that makes our job even more gratifying.

The second half of this year is even busier than the first, so I’m thrilled to be welcoming two new members to my team. Jaime Hall was one of our interns for the 2009 wedding season and is re-joining us as an event coordinator. Jamie Patterson just completed our internship program and is joining the team as an assistant event coordinator. Welcome aboard!

I’ve been incredibly blessed with the growth and success of my business over the years, so it’s important to remember to give back. I’m honored to be working as this year’s production chairperson for the American Cancer Society’s Cattle Baron’s Ball, taking place on November 6th at the Shotwell-Gustafson Pavilion on the campus of Oakland University. Each day, 58 people in Metro Detroit are diagnosed with cancer. The Cattle Baron’s Ball raises money to help the American Cancer Society assist these patients and caregivers early in their cancer journey, providing much-needed resources and support. Check out the event website and consider getting involved, or just attend and enjoy a night of great food and great fun.

I’m also committed to paying it forward. Today marks my first day as the Michigan state coordinator of the Association of Bridal Consultants. I’m looking forward to working with other wedding planners across the state to strengthen our industry, continue our education and build our companies to reach new goals. ABC is a fantastic organization and I encourage anyone with questions to contact me. I’m always willing to help out!

Real Wedding: Beth & Jon

I mentioned Beth & Jon's home wedding last month, when it was featured on Bride Buzz. The couple lives in Chicago and they hired us to plan their charming wedding at Beth's parents' home in Grass Lake.

To say that it rained the week before the wedding would be an understatement. It poured. Buckets. It even poured rain during the early morning hours on the actual wedding day. However, by the time the vendor team began arriving, the sun came out and the ground dried up considerably. We were even able to take down the ceremony tent and give Beth the open-air look that she wanted.

In our 9 years of being in business, we have never had an outdoor wedding rained out. I'm convinced that someone upstairs likes us.

I've loved shoes for a long time. My first real job in high school was at a shoe store, and armed with an employee discount, my obsession began. When I moved into the dorm my freshman year of college, I thought my friend was going to lose it when he discovered that the enormous box he just carried up three flights of stairs was filled only with my shoes (and not even all of them!) I'm passing on this fondness to my daughter...when she was only 2, she had more shoes than my husband and two sons combined.

On your wedding day, the shoes you wear is one more way to show off your style - whether they're classic and simple or fun and flirty.

Bride Buzz is a new wedding-inspiration website that launched this month and one of the co-founders sent an email inviting us to check them out. Imagine my surprise when I found one of our weddings featured there!

Beth and Jon's wedding took place at her parents' home in Grass Lake and we faced our share of challenges in executing this event...most notably, days of torrential rain leading up to the wedding (before the rehearsal, a frog was actually swimming across the dance floor). In my 9 years as a wedding planner, I had never had an outdoor wedding rained out (knock on wood!) and I'm happy to report that our record still stands.

Always the wedding assistant, finally the bride...Engaged!!

Well, it finally happened. After over 7 years of dating (yes, really 7), Ray proposed on Christmas morning! It was a really sweet moment and to save him some embarrassment, I won’t go into the details. The ring is gorgeous and just my style. The center stone was his grandma’s … tear. For a guy that stands at 6’2” and is a typical man’s man, he really is a true romantic and I am lucky to have him.

So here’s what I know so far:
• The wedding will be in February or March 2011
• There will be a lot of do-it-yourself projects and shopping around!
• Lastly, I’m so happy to finally marry the love of my life

I’ve been very fortunate to work on some amazing weddings with Laura Davis Events in the past year, so I have plenty of inspiration. I can only hope our wedding is just as fabulous. I’m so excited to start planning and to share the process with all of you.

A Can't-Miss Trunk Show

My good friend, Karen Sherman, owner of Crowning Glory Bridal Accessories, sent me an invitation to one of her upcoming trunk shows, and I just had to share it with all of you. Happy New Year! It's hard to believe that a new year and a new decade is already upon us. I always love January...not because of the bitter cold (I could do without that!)...but because there's so much to look forward to.

This is the month that many of our new clients find us. Some just got engaged over the holidays; some have been doing the planning on their own and are now realizing they need help pulling it all together. I love meeting so many new people, hearing their stories and becoming a part of such an important time in their lives.

For our existing clients, this is the year they get married! All of the emails, phone calls, meetings, decisions and details will finally come together into one amazing day that their family and friends will talk about for years to come. I know that I'll tear up when I watch a few of our brides walk down the aisle towards their husbands-to-be (which is ironic since I didn't cry at all on my own wedding day...not one tear, much to my husband's annoyance.)

I'm looking forward to working with some incredibly creative wedding professionals, many of whom have become good friends as well. I'm continually inspired by the immense talent in the Detroit area, and thankful that I get the opportunity to work with them every day. Other parts of the country may get more recognition in the events industry, but we can compete with the best of them.

I'm especially excited to have another year working with one of the most dedicated teams in the business - Marianne, Kelly, Leah (and now Jamie). We have a lot of projects in the works for the coming year, and I couldn't do it all without them. You ladies are the best!

I hope everyone looks at 2010 as a new beginning and a chance to make good things happen. On behalf of everyone here at Laura Davis Events, we wish you all the very best!

Mmmmm...cake

Yesterday, I took one of my brides to design a groom's cake for her fiancé (since it's a surprise, I won't say who). We had a blast meeting with Courtney Clark of Cake Nouveau at her adorable shop in downtown Ann Arbor. We came up with a super fun design and of course, the cake was amazingly delicious. Courtney has competed in (and won) many Cake Challenge competitions on the Food Network, so you'd expect nothing less.

On the drive home, I started thinking about all of the unique groom's cakes our clients have done over the years. It's a great way to incorporate a bit of the groom's personality into the wedding or rehearsal dinner, and makes your event that more memorable.

Oh, the places you'll go - Ann Arbor!

Yesterday, Laura and I spent the day in Ann Arbor visiting with vendors and checking out some sites. We had a ton of fun exploring the area and catching up with friends!

Our first stop of the day was to visit Linda Wan at her photography studio. We had a great chat over tea. Linda shoots entirely in black and white with the traditional film method, something very rare to find in this digital age. Here are a couple of shots from Linda’s website.

We visited Bryant Stuckey of Decadent Delight for the grand opening of his bakery shop. We indulged in freshly baked cinnamon buns and delicious fruit tarts – it’s a tough job, I know, but someone has to do it.

(I got a kick out of this since she’s a diehard Spartan, and her husband and I are both Michigan fans!)

At the Bell Tower Hotel, Sara was kind enough to give us a tour. This cozy, European-styled boutique hotel is located in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor. There are a variety of rooms and suites for wedding guests, bridal party and newlyweds, and it’s the perfect place to stay on your wedding night. We were impressed by the hospitality and felt at home entering the lobby.

We then visited the University of Michigan Law Quad – what a great backdrop for photo opportunities! The amazing architecture of the buildings and the stained glass windows from the library is a favorite of many photographers in the area.

We also took a quick tour of the Ann Arbor Art Center. With two levels of rentable space, this blank canvas could be turned into the perfect place for a ceremony or reception. I can’t wait to find just the right clients for this venue.

Next we met with Abby Rosenbaum of Abby Rose Photo. She is energetic and passionate about her trade and that’s translated immediately when you meet her. She was the wedding photographer for Donelle & Joe and Sarah & Matt, and we always love working with Abby. She recently got engaged and we can’t wait to hear more about her wedding plans…congratulations, Abby!

Our last stop of the day was Zingerman’s – a MUST for any trip to Ann Arbor (or even when you’re remotely close to it!) The ambience of the deli shop is an experience in itself (it smells amazing), but that’s just the beginning; their top-notch food and customer service is the icing on the cake. Paul Metler and Laura Gillis, from the catering department, were absolutely delightful to chat with – it was like sharing a meal with old friends!

Back in September, Ambassador Magazine invited us to be a part of their holiday table settings photo shoot. Marianne and I had a great time designing our vision of the perfect holiday table. We wanted to think outside of the box and stay away from some of the more obvious interpretations of "holiday", so we focused in on an all-white design concept, bringing in layers of texture with linens, crystals and feathers.

A special thank you to Shannon from Emplume, Todd from Colonial Event Rental and Todd from Chair Covers & Linens, who graciously provided us with everything we asked for to execute our vision, especially on such a short notice.

Last night, a few of us from the team attended the annual Detroit NACE awards gala, the "academy awards" of our industry. We were thrilled to win the award for Best Team Event for Justine & Charlie's amazing wedding last November. Thank you to our industry peers for recognizing us with this honor...it truly means so much to us!

Amazing wedding, amazing video

Last night, Take 1 Productions hosted our team for a special viewing of Shannon & Keith's wedding video. It was nothing short of amazing. Shannon & Keith's spectacular wedding was held at the MGM Grand Detroit last year, and was in fact the very first wedding there. We worked with the couple for almost two years to create an unforgettable experience for them and their guests, and it was exciting to relive it all.

Don & Joanne Pham, the talent behind Take 1 Productions, are truly gifted filmmakers who capture the emotions, events and details in a unique, cinematic form. It is always a pleasure to work with them and we appreciate the amazing job they always do for our clients.

Joanne, thank you so much for hosting us last night. We had a great time!

You don't need a wedding planner...

Today we came across a great article and just had to share. Julie Hinton of Forevermore Events, a full-service wedding and party planning company based in Utah, authored a clever piece in the Spectrum Newspaper about why you should...and shouldn't...hire a professional wedding planner. Enjoy!

Here's when you wouldn't hire a wedding planner...

In these economical times, we are all trying to cut back. This concept even applies towards your special day. Weddings that used to be lavish events are now turning to simplistic trends.

One thing still rings true: whether you are trying to conserve or splurge, there is a long list of to-dos before you can say, "I do." These lists can sometimes feel endless and take away from the excitement during your engagement. This is where a wedding planner eases the pressure.

Is a wedding planner right for you, your budget and your overall event?

Do not hire a wedding planner if you want to spend more money. You heard me right; you can save money with a wedding planner. In the past, planners have been perceived for only indulgent couples with money to spare. This is not the case these days.

Wedding planners are becoming affordable and can even get you discounts and special rates by consulting through them. Wedding professionals build up relationships with each other and will sometimes give benefits for referring them.

On multiple occasions I have seen free services thrown in by a vendor or a price even deducted in half because they went through a wedding planner.

Planners can also help you get more bang for your buck. They know how to cut back on certain expenses to make your event look like a splurge even though you might be on a tight budget.

Another reason you would not hire a wedding planner is if you can be in two places at once. Brides have a large role. That is, of course, being the bride. On a wedding day, it is not uncommon to have a 16-hour work day, a mop in one hand and an iron in the other.

The last thing a bride needs to do is to be steaming linen or polishing silverware before she is about to walk down the middle aisle.

Finally, don't hire a wedding planner if you already spend eight or more hours a day reading, writing, researching and dreaming about weddings.

Wedding planners are professionals that obsess over weddings, daydream about weddings and are always scheming new trends for weddings. They are full-time wedding gurus that have been doing this for years, not just for a few months of engagement.

By tapping into their skills and involving them from the beginning of your initial planning, you will be amazed at the creations that will come to surface, giving you the wedding you did not even know was in your reach, without breaking the bank.

Real Wedding: Heather & Julian - The Wedding

Heather and Julian wanted their 455-guest wedding to be elegant, sophisticated and full of warmth. Starting with a color palette of champagne and ivory, we brought in splashes of terra cotta and amber with the flowers and lighting. A bank of flat screen televisions greeted guests as they arrived and showcased a slideshow made by a friend of the groom. Heather and Julian's custom monogram was pulled through the entire event - from the invitations, shuttle signs and programs to the place cards, menus and table numbers.

We kicked off Heather & Julian's fabulous wedding weekend with a 100-guest rehearsal dinner. The groom's mother wanted to create a festive atmosphere to encourage both sides of the family to mingle and get to know each other, so we incorporated food stations featuring various cuisines. The theme of the evening was "Just Paradise", a nod to the groom's parents' vacation home in Jamaica.

Real Wedding: Donelle & Joe

Tonight I was having dinner with one of my wedding planner friends, when I happened to look up and see two of my favorite past clients walking into the restaurant. Joe and Donelle were married in September 2007. They are a fun, easy-going couple and we had a blast planning their wedding. It was great running into them, and I thought I'd share some photos from their day.

Real Wedding: Sue & Ed

When we began working with Sue to plan her intimate springtime wedding, she said that she wanted to create a garden feeling through the decor. The venue's glass conservatory was the perfect setting to accomplish this atmosphere, and guests felt as if the event was nestled within a private garden.

Both the ceremony and reception were held in the same room. Since we love to work in little surprises throughout a wedding, guests arrived to find the room set up solely for the ceremony, filled with hydrangea, roses and lush greenery.

Afterwards, while guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d'oeuvres on an outdoor patio at the other end of the property, we teamed up with the florist and hall staff to completely transform the space into the reception layout...all in just one hour. The hard work was worth it and the room looked beautiful.

Creme de la Creme

Those of us in the special event industry know the incredible talent that calls metro Detroit home, and tomorrow we'll be attending an event to showcase Detroit as the Ultimate American Destination.

Creme de la Creme is a fashion event and afterglow party hosted by channel 4 fashion editor Jon Jordan, and will feature the premier of the "Carrie Gown" (yes, the same Vivienne Westwood gown from the Sex and the City movie).

The event will be held at the Detroit Athletic Club and tickets can still be purchased at the Creme de la Creme website.

Choosing a Veil

Veiling a bride has long been a custom of concealing a bride’s beauty from uninvited suitors or to hide her from evil spirits that threaten to steal her from her beloved. Superstition also suggests bad luck for even the groom to see his bride until the ceremony was finished.

Today, veils are considered more of an elegant adornment to a bride’s attire and offer many choices of fabric and style. Here are some of the more popular styles worn.

Blusher – a shorter veil worn over the face about 24-26 inches long, usually attached to a longer veil. The blusher stays over the face during the entire ceremony and lifted at the end when the groom kisses the bride. Traditionally, this was the first time a groom would see his bride.

Birdcage – made of a wide-open weave of netting, it extends to just over the chin.

Elbow length – a single or multiple layered veil about 25 inches in length to the elbow.

Fly-away – a less formal, layered veil that just brushes the shoulders.

Finger tip – a more popular veil because it compliments most gowns, its length extends to the finger tips.

Mantilla – drapes over the entire head and is worn without a headpiece. Spanish-style lace frames the face.

Ballet/waltz – simple, straight fabric that falls to the ankles.

Chapel – a more formal veil usually worn with a chapel-length train extending 6-12 inches beyond the length of the train.

Cathedral – a formal veil usually worn with a cathedral-length train extending 6-12 inches beyond the length of the train.

Since there are so many options to choose from, it is important to try on the veil with your gown before making a final decision. Make sure the veil you choose compliments the gown with a similar style and appropriate formality. You may want to consider borrowing a veil from a family member or friend. Even though today the veil is more of an accessory than folk lore, it is still considered to be a symbol of good fortune when borrowed from a happily married bride!

Speed Dating, Wedding Style

Last weekend we participated in the Wedding Express, a bridal show with a unique twist. This speed networking event allowed brides and vendors to meet for 5 minutes at a time before the gong rang and it was time to move on to another vendor's table.

The event was held at the Royal Park Hotel, which is one of our favorite venues for weddings and special events. We brought in specialty linens to make our table pop, and we passed out little gift boxes to the brides who met with us.

On Friday, March 27, event manager Marianne Thai welcomed a baby girl into the world. Annabelle Jillian was born at 6:25 p.m., weighed 6 lbs, 11 oz and is 20 inches long.

Congratulations to Marianne, Ed, and big sister Ellie!

Both of our weddings were "firsts". Shannon and Keith's big day was the first wedding ever held at the MGM Grand Detroit and Justine and Charlie's wedding featured an amazing fireworks display, the first of its kind at the Royal Park Hotel. Enjoy!

We helped Heather and Brent plan their intimate winter-themed wedding long distance, since they live in Florida. Now, we have to wonder why anyone would purposely come north during this frigid Michigan winter, but we're glad they did. Not only are they an incredibly sweet couple, they have impeccable taste. We even arranged to make it snow that day to coordinate with the decor. ;)

Making It Personal: Monograms

Creating a monogram for your wedding can allow you to have a one-of-a-kind detail that is understated and an impressive visual reminder of your new life together. In some weddings, the monogram can be used sparsely as an accent, and at others, couples have chosen to use their monogram as their theme.

A traditional monogram incorporates three letters, and the bride’s initial always goes first. When the bride takes the groom’s last name, the order is: bride’s first initial, shared last initial (usually larger), groom’s first initial.

If the bride keeps her last name, the couple may choose a four-initial monogram: bride’s first initial, bride’s last initial, groom’s last initial, groom’s first initial.

Today, however, the old rules don’t necessarily have to apply. Many couples are looking to create unique and creative monograms that incorporate their names, wedding date, initials or motifs.

So where can you use your custom monogram? The possibilities are endless – invitations, unity candles, programs, aisle runners, seating charts, menus, napkins, cake toppers, favor labels, ice bars, gobo lighting (design projected onto the dance floor, wall, etc.) are all great places – just to name a few!

So we were very excited when Abby and her team decided to feature one of our weddings. Andrea and Greg had an intimate, upscale wedding in the conservatory at the Royal Park Hotel and every detail was carefully considered to make this black-tie event a night to remember for their guests. Happy Valentine's Day! Today is a popular day for wedding proposals, so in honor of all of those newly engaged brides-to-be, I thought this was the perfect time to make some announcements.

A lot of changes have been going on behind the scenes at Laura Davis Events. We've rebranded our company with a new look and I'm excited to unveil it today. I'm immensely proud of the incredible staff who works for me. In January, Ali Lazzeri was promoted to event coordinator and Natalie Gall joined the team as assistant event coordinator. Congratulations!

Real Wedding: Justine & Charlie

At our first meeting, Justine said she wanted her wedding to be simple and beautiful. A few moments later, she mentioned that she wanted to incorporate a fireworks show into her reception. By the time that the big day arrived, this "simple" wedding included vocalists from the Michigan Opera Theatre, ice sculpture centerpieces, marbled chocolate menus, two ice bars with the couple's custom monogram, a photo booth, strands of crystals and delicate butterflies hanging over the dance floor, couture truffle favors, and a 15-minute fireworks display set to music (the first of its kind at the hotel).

No matter what you celebrate this time of year, we want to wish everyone a very happy and safe holiday season. As we reflect on the past year, we have so much to be thankful for.

To our clients...thank you for putting your trust in us to help you with one of the most important days of your life. It's an honor to work so closely with you and to get to know you and your families. At every wedding, there's always a moment that touches our hearts - the look on the bride's face when we send her down the aisle, the couple's first dance when they're lost in each other's eyes, and the heartfelt toast from the father of the bride that brings a tear to our eyes. It's those moments that remind us why we love this job and why we're so lucky to do what we do.

To our vendors...thank you for your partnerships. We've had the pleasure of working with so many creative and talented people, and when we all come together as a team, we're able to create some amazing memories for our clients and their guests. Many of you have become so much more than just colleagues - you've become our friends. You've shown us support in so many ways, and for that, we truly thank you.

And last, but certainly not least, to our husbands, children and families...thank you for your uncompromising love and support. We could not do this job without you. You are the ones in the background - understanding when we work crazy hours; listening to our countless wedding-related stories; assembling invitations, menus, favors, gift bags, and driving all over southeastern Michigan to pick up items and make deliveries for us. You are the ones who love us no matter what, and you are the ones who mean the most to us in this world. We love you and appreciate you more than you'll ever know.

We hope that everyone will take the time to slow down and think about all of the good things in your lives. Our office will be closed for the holidays, and we're looking forward to spending time with our loved ones over the next two weeks and taking time to relax. We'll reopen the office on January 6th, and we're looking forward to working with all of our fabulous clients and vendors. It's going to be a great year!
